McLaren’s Lando Norris wins 2024 Singapore Grand Prix

MCLAREN’S Lando Norris has won the 2024 Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old started in pole position on Sunday (Sep 22) night and maintained a strong lead ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. It is the 10th time in 15 editions of the night race that the pole-sitter has gone on to win the race.

About half-way through the two-hour race, his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri overtook both Hamilton and the British driver’s teammate George Russell, catching up to Verstappen.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who began the race ninth in position, passed Hamilton at about 9.25 pm, breaking into the top five.

The race ended with Verstappen taking second place and Piastri in third. Some 269,072 fans attended the race this year, more than last year’s 264,108 when the Marina Bay Street Circuit was updated due to redevelopment of The Float @ Marina Bay into NS Square.

Over the race weekend, fans enjoyed electrifying performances by OneRepublic, Kylie Minogue, BabyMonster and other internationally renowned artists.

“There is already phenomenal interest for 2025, with all super early bird tickets released on Thursday sold out in a record two days,” race promoter Singapore GP said. Fans who missed out on these tickets can purchase them as part of the early bird phase from Oct 1.

The Singapore Tourism Board and Singapore GP currently have a seven-year deal to host the Formula One race here until 2028.
