ST HeadSTart: Let’s talk about early retirement

Welcome to the latest edition of ST HeadSTart, bringing you the best of The Straits Times’ career and personal finance coverage every Tuesday noon. Sign up here to get weekly tips right into your inbox.

Hi, it’s Prisca here. Fire appears to be raging these days.

No, I’m not referring to the maximum spiciness of your favourite mala dish.

The financial independence, retire early (Fire) movement points to the desire to retire earlier than the usual age range of 65 to 70, through a regime of aggressive investing, saving and frugality during one’s working years.

In the latest episode of HeadSTart On Record, business correspondent Sue-Ann Tan speaks to The Woke Salaryman co-founder He Ruiming about his journey to achieve Fire by age 32.

What should you do to retire at 40, if you’re in your 20s? And what does it mean to retire meaningfully? Sue-Ann, Ruiming and DBS financial literacy expert Lorna Tan tackle these questions and more. Listen to their conversation here.

This week, among the other topics we look at is ikigai, which refers broadly to what brings joy and value to life. What is your source of ikigai? Tell me more at headstart@sph.com.sg

I hope you enjoy today’s newsletter. Have a great rest of the week.
