ST HeadSTart: Thinking of working abroad? You’re not alone

Hello, Hong Yi here again with the latest edition of HeadSTart.

Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. Forgive the melodrama, but that sentiment broadly applies in my experience as a manpower journalist when I ask other early-career Singaporeans how working abroad figures in their career plans. Many are apprehensive about overseas job opportunities.

It’s hard to blame them. High living standards here, relatively low taxes and moderate (though growing) living costs – not to mention the familiarity of home – means it is hard to countenance a move, despite the personal and career growth up for grabs.

My colleague Teo Kai Xiang deepens this conversation through interviews with young Singaporeans who have kicked off their careers overseas. I hope their accounts will prompt you to examine where – literally – your aspirations lie, like they did for me.

Meanwhile, in life, worries about money can spiral out of proportion when comparisons are made to those around us, a phenomenon my fellow HeadSTart team member Prisca writes about in the latest instalment of the Young and Savvy column.

Do pause to mull over the stories we have lined up below. Have a great day ahead!
